abstract = "The use of empirical models for water quality parameters retrieval
based on orbital radiometric data has been criticized by the
remote sensing scientific community. While earlier studies were
widely based on empirical methods, currently, a great effort is
focused in another direction: the development of analytical
models. Controversially, in this paper we present a wide review of
current studies (2009 2014), based on empirical models to evaluate
spatial-temporal distribution of suspended sediment concentrations
(SSC) in case 2 waters. As we have founded an inconsistency in the
bibliography, this paper aims to discuss what are the reasons for
that. In order to support our views, we carried out a residual
analysis of empirical models for SSC retrieval to identify
possible limiting factors. Five empirical models for Amazonian
rivers, based on Landsat 5/TM data were used. The results do not
demonstrate any relationship between model errors and: (i) time
(1984-2011); (ii) period of the year; (iii) SWIR band 5 as a proxy
of the Sun Glint effect; (iv) solar zenithal angle; (v) an index
of atmospheric scattering. As the models estimates arent related
with those variables, they can be applied to any scene along time,
allowing for SSC monitoring. The large sample number of scenes
used in those models, acquired in a wide range of acquisition
geometry, atmospheric conditions among other variables should
explain the success for application.",
